As vegan diners become more and more common, every dimension of the restaurant industry has had to make accommodations. Even fast food giants like Carl’s Jr. have decided to offer vegan options nation-wide. Now, thanks to the efforts of a dedicated group of petitioners, Papa John’s Pizza is following suit.
Animal rights group Animal Aid began the charge with a highly successful petition campaign asking Papa John’s Pizza to add vegan cheese option to its menu. The petition received approximately 30,000 signatures, leading the pizza giant to announce it will begin to offer vegan cheese options in the UK. No word yet has been issued on whether the pie will make it to The States any time soon.
Animal Aid campaign manager Tod Bradbury said: “We are thrilled to see that Papa John’s has reacted positively to our petition and that they are looking to introduce a vegan cheese alternative very soon. We thank them for taking our comments and those of almost 30,000 others on board.
“By adding vegan cheese to their menu, Papa John’s will be showing that they are up to date with the fast-growing vegan movement. They will appeal to a much wider audience – be they vegans, those wanting to try vegan food or indeed those who have allergies to dairy products.
“We hope that Papa John’s decision not only has a positive effect on their sales, but also encourages other pizza chains and restaurants who have not yet introduced a vegan cheese to do so.”
Papa John’s isn’t the first pizza giant to stock vegan pies. Dominos is also in the process of making mass-produced plant-based pies a reality, and with so many innovations happening in the vegan pizza world, thye most likely won’t be the last.
Of course, you don’t have to pick up your phone and order to get great vegan pizza. Check out these seasonal pizza recipes, courtesy of the Food Monster App.

This Shaved Brussels Sprouts and Grilled Pear Pizza from Gabrielle St. Claire is like the fall version of a salad pizza. Brussels sprouts, caramelized onions, Shiitake bacon, and vegan Parmesan on top of a crispy crust each play a supporting role of bringing together all dimensions of flavor and texture that make this pizza so perfect. The Shiitake bacon offers a savory taste, the onions a sweet and sour taste, the grilled pear a mild sweetness, and the shaved Brussels sprouts bring the entire pizza together.
