Dr. Ben Schon, the lead scientist for the Food by Design program at Plant & Food Research, expressed the program’s purpose succinctly, stating, “Here in New Zealand, we’re good at growing conventional horticultural crops, but looking into the future, there’s a lot of change coming in the world with population growth, increasing urbanization, and Climate change.” This forward-looking initiative aims to grow fruit tissue without the parts that are typically discarded, such as apple cores or orange rinds. By providing consumers with only the edible fruit tissue, this approach also contributes to reducing food waste, a global concern.
Lab-grown foods represent a promising avenue for sustainable agriculture. Still in its nascent stages, this technology has garnered interest for its potential to revolutionize the food industry. According to Dr. Ali Rashidinejad, a senior food scientist at Massey University, overcoming regulatory hurdles and gaining consumer acceptance will be significant challenges. However, younger generations, motivated by health benefits and environmental considerations, appear more open to embracing innovative foods.
The Plant & Food Research program, initiated 18 months ago, concentrates on the cellular cultivation of various fruits, including blueberries, apples, cherries, feijoas, peaches, nectarines, and grapes. While the ultimate goal is to produce nutritionally rich and enjoyable lab-grown fruit, researchers acknowledge that achieving this objective may require several more years of dedicated effort, if it proves achievable at all.
Lab-grown fruit has the potential to transform urban agriculture. Dr. Sam Baldwin, a strategy leader at Plant & Food Research, suggests that this technology could be particularly suitable for cultivating fruit tissue within cities, thereby reducing both costs and carbon emissions associated with transporting food into urban centers. While the environmental impact of lab-grown fruit production remains uncertain, it has the potential to offset the carbon footprint of traditional fruit farming, which often involves long-distance transportation.
The lab-grown fruit initiative also holds promise in mitigating the impact of weather-related food loss. As exemplified by Cyclone Gabrielle, which devastated parts of Hawkes Bay earlier this year, New Zealand’s fruit production is vulnerable to climatic events. Lab-grown fruit could serve as a resilient alternative to traditional farming, offering a buffer against the unpredictability of weather conditions.
New Zealand’s exploration of lab-grown fruit is a testament to the country’s commitment to addressing the multifaceted challenges of Climate change, urbanization, and food security.
