BodaiNYC Restaurant, the first reservation-only private dining Chinese tasting menu restaurant in the U.S. by Master Chef Guo Wenjun, has unveiled an exquisite new plant-based tasting menu. The name “Bodai,” derived from Sanskrit, signifies enlightenment and wisdom, reflecting the restaurant’s commitment to a deeper understanding of vegetarian cuisine. Drawing inspiration from ancient culinary texts, including the “Qing Palace Dietary Chapter” and Li Shizhen’s “Compendium of Materia Medica,” Chef Guo has meticulously crafted a menu that honors the rich history of imperial vegetarian cuisine while embracing modern plant-based cooking techniques.

Recently, Preeta Sinha, the founder of One Green Planet, was personally invited by Chef Guo and his partner, Irene, as one of the first to try his new plant-based tasting experience at Bodai. Having previously dined with them at the Fashion for Development First Ladies Luncheon catered by Chef Guo, Preeta was thrilled to try the full Guo experience. “This tasting was one of the best plant-based experiences I’ve had in the city,” Sinha remarked. “Chef Guo’s ability to blend ancient culinary traditions with fresh, modern ingredients is truly remarkable. We dined with intention.” She also noted that those seeking a completely vegan menu simply need to request the quail egg be removed from the soup and for the dessert not to be served in egg shells.

The intimate atmosphere of Bodai enhances the dining experience further. The server for the night was exceptionally knowledgeable, explaining each dish’s background and the rich cultural history that influenced Chef Guo’s choices. The restaurant’s decor is a personal reflection of Chef Guo, with artifacts from his home or his personal collection creating an inviting and warm environment. Even the napkins were sustainably dyed, showcasing Chef Guo’s commitment to sustainability throughout the dining experience.

Preeta was particularly impressed by the variety of unique mushrooms featured in the dishes, some of which, to her surprise, were entirely new to her. The carefully selected wine pairings complemented each course beautifully, enhancing the overall tasting experience.

Guests can expect to indulge in a vibrant assortment of flavors in the “Life of Enlightenment” plate, which represents life’s journey through its five fundamental tastes: sour, sweet, bitter, spicy, and salty. Other standout dishes include “Bodai Buddha Jumps Over the Wall,” a slow-cooked broth enriched with 21 wild or organic vegetables, and “Pan-seared Boletus with Green Millet,” showcasing the delicate flavors of wild mushrooms paired with organic grains. Bodai also offers a unique twist on classic flavors with their “Sweet and Sour Vegetarian Riblets,” capturing the essence of traditional Chinese sweet and sour dishes while remaining entirely plant-based.

The ambiance of Bodai is equally enchanting, designed in the style of a traditional quadrangle that weaves together elements of nature and architecture. The Zen Garden, with a pomegranate tree symbolizing health and prosperity, enhances the overall dining experience.

For those wishing to experience this exceptional culinary journey, reservations can be made by contacting Bodai NYC by phone at (917) 463-7997, email at BodaiNYC@gmail.com, or visit their website at BodaiNYC.com.
