A dad recently wrote to the Daily Mail asking for advice. His wife became vegan four years ago while they were trying to conceive their daughter. She attributes veganism as a major factor in their being able to conceive. After the birth of their daughter, the mother asked to raise her vegan, which the father agreed to. Vegan diets are widely regarded as safe for children, provided parents ensure certain key nutrients are met. Indeed, the father even states in his letter both that his daughter has been raised “vegan since birth” and that she is “thriving”.

Despite agreeing with his wife to raise their daughter vegan, the inquiring dad recently began secretly feeding his daughter meat after she expressed interest in a burger he was consuming. Since then, he regularly fed his daughter meat behind his wife’s back. However, this secrecy could only continue for so long. Eventually, his wife found out and he confessed that despite their previous agreement, he had been feeding their daughter meat. Hurt by this, the wife stated that she was not sure she could still trust the father with their child. She is now considering divorce. The husband feels that the wife is overreacting.
The response advocated a discussion between the husband, wife, and pediatrician regarding meat consumption. While veganism is safe for children, the advisor reminded readers that it is normal for children to copy their parents. Thus, it is unlikely that the daughter will remain fully vegan while her father continues to consume meat around her. They also remind readers that by forbidding certain foods, they inevitably become more attractive to children.
Raising vegan children is possible, healthy, and positively contributes to our planet’s future. As Earth’s population continues to grow, we must overhaul our food systems to preserve the environment and feed the entirety of the population. Moving away from animal products is an important part of this. Animal agriculture is responsible for 14.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, it contributes to Pollution and deforestation. Both of these have catastrophic implications for Climate change.
All children, regardless of their diet, deserve not to worry about where their next meal will come from. In the United States, 1 in 8 children face food insecurity. Sign this petition asking the U.S. to pass Universal Meal Programs Now!
