Ruffled feathers, upset customers, and a simmering online dispute — UK-born celebrity chef, John Mountain, stirs up more than just culinary delights at his restaurant, Fyre, in the northern Perth suburb of Connolly. After an unhappy vegan customer voiced her dissatisfaction with the lack of meat-free options, Mountain declared an unprecedented ban: “Sadly all vegans are now banned from Fyre for mental health reasons.”
The row originated when a local customer asked for vegan alternatives, to which Mountain tried to accommodate with vegetable dishes. However, the subsequent complaint about a lack of fulfilling vegan options, and the $32 price tag for a veggie dish, sent the chef into a culinary tailspin.
Unhappy with the critique, which suggested the restaurant’s survival depended on adapting to evolving dietary preferences, Mountain responded with a ban on all vegans. His statement on Facebook read: “You and all your vegan mates can all go and enjoy your dishes in another venue. You are now banned.”
Mountain’s controversial decree ignited an online war on Google reviews. Supporters and detractors clashed, resulting in a flurry of one-star and five-star ratings. One reviewer, supportive of the vegan lifestyle, argued: “In today’s society, the demand for vegan options is on the rise.” The review encouraged Mountain to see vegan dishes as an opportunity to tap into a wider market and increase revenue.
However, the chef’s stance remained unmoved. “F*** vegans seriously… I’m done. At the end of the day, it’s not what I want to do, they can f*** off,” he was reported to have said.
Despite the heated online tussle, many customers sided with Mountain. One reviewer expressed delight in the restaurant’s decision not to cater to vegans: “All the trees saved by this choice lessens our nation’s impact on global CO2 levels.”
A former TV star on shows like the Great British Menu and Chef Race UK v US, and a culinary collaborator with industry heavyweights like Heston Blumenthal and Marco Pierre White, Mountain certainly knows how to cause a stir both in and out of the kitchen.
