A shocking video was posted on Reddit recently on the r/interestingasfuck forum showing a live fish on a plate biting a chopstick just a moment before being eaten.

The horrifying video posted by u/starfoxzeronie with the caption “Fish served at restaurant bites chopstick.” went viral on Reddit with users saying the dish is called “animal abuse on a plate”.
The fish is known as warasubo and is a species of eel goby that is found in China, Korea, and Japan. It is popular in Japan and is prepared alive and can survive in the air for a large amount of time.
Many were quick to the comments to say that it is a cultural thing and that many cultures actually believe eating the animal live adds more flavor.
“I get it’s a culture thing but eating anything alive just beyond my capabilities,” one user wrote.
Fish are sentient creates and the high demand for fish is quickly wiping out the world’s fish stocks which affects the deliate ecosystem of the ocean. According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the aquaculture industry is growing at a rate that is three times faster than land-based animal agriculture.
As of July 2017, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists 455 critically endangered fish species, including 87 which are tagged as possibly extinct. The fewer fish in the ocean, the less food the larger marine animals have to survive on, leading to an imbalance in marine food webs.
According to Counting Animals, “An individual who chooses to take on a vegetarian diet can save over 225 fish and 151 shellfish a year. If just half of the U.S. population (about 150,000,000 individuals) eliminated seafood from their diets, that would mean about 33,750,000,000 fish would remain in the ocean every year.”
Everything nutritious that people believe they are getting from fish can get from other sources. Fish often have been exposed to many toxic chemicals like mercury which the consumer then eats when they eat the fish. Fish are also sentient creatures and can feel pain. There is no reason that we need to continue to eat these animals.

This eating live fish is absolutely disgusting to me. Bullfights in Spain are supposed to be cultural as well as cock fighting is in Mexico. I hate cock fighting or any kind of animal fighting but there were some in Tucson who said it was their culture. Well I say if your culture is mean and cruel to other creatures then your culture needs to be changed. I once saw on TV on a news show a poor big fish who had been cut along his body in a herringbone fashion and the fish was still alive and breathing. It was the most horrible thing I ever saw and it needs to stop. It is disgusting and uncivilized.
