Bananas, one of the most popular fruits worldwide, are facing a serious threat that could drastically alter their future. While scientists are working on solutions, the taste and texture of this beloved fruit may never be the same again.
Banana crops around the globe are being ravaged by two devastating diseases, and experts are concerned that these diseases could lead to the extinction of the bananas we currently enjoy. This isn’t the first time the fruit has been in danger. In the 1950s, a similar crisis occurred when a disease wiped out the original variety of bananas. To save the industry, farmers turned to a more resistant variety, but that decision has made the fruit more vulnerable today. The bananas we eat now are clones of each other, meaning they lack the genetic diversity needed to fend off new threats.
These diseases have now spread to all banana-growing regions, and it’s only a matter of time before they take a devastating toll on the industry. Chiquita, one of the largest banana suppliers, is at the forefront of finding a solution. Scientists at the company are working to develop a new banana using genetic material from 150 different species. Their goal is to create a variety that can resist these diseases.
However, this new banana may not taste or feel the same as the ones we’re used to. While it could save the fruit from extinction, the iconic flavor and texture of bananas may be lost in the process.
