Every morning, millions of Americans press a single button for their daily caffeine fix, not realizing that their coffee might contain something extra. Researchers have found that single-serve coffee pods—like those used in Keurig and Nespresso machines—can release microplastics into your cup. These tiny plastic fragments, often less than five millimeters long, can travel through the bloodstream and reach vital organs.

Recent studies, including one published in in 2024, linked microplastics in human arteries to higher risks of heart attacks, strokes, and early death. While scientists are still learning exactly how these particles affect the body, there’s growing concern that they can cause inflammation, oxidative stress, and immune disruptions—all bad news for our health and the environment.

The problem starts when the hot water and pressure inside single-serve machines cause the plastic pods to shed microscopic debris. Even older machines can worsen the issue, releasing more particles as their internal plastic components degrade over time. Microplastics have also been found in bottled water, disposable cups, and even milk processed through plastic tubing—meaning our exposure is constant.

Experts suggest taking a “precautionary approach.” Stainless steel or reusable pods offer a safer, more sustainable alternative. They’re initially pricier but last for years and eliminate plastic waste from your morning routine. Some companies market bioplastic or plant-based pods, but research shows these materials can still release harmful chemicals when heated.

Choosing a French press, pour-over, or stainless-steel pod not only protects your health but also reduces the billions of plastic pods that end up in landfills and oceans every year. Small daily swaps like this can have a huge impact on our planet’s future.

If you care about your health, the earth, and the animals we share it with, consider ditching the single-use pod. Your coffee—and the planet—will thank you.
