Dogs are often called our best friends, and it seems there’s a scientific reason for this close bond. A new study conducted by the Kennel Club in the UK has revealed that dogs and their owners often have strikingly similar personalities. The study found that owners unconsciously choose dogs whose personalities match their own. If you’ve ever thought that you and your furry friend are two peas in a pod, you may have been onto something!
The study analyzed 16 popular dog breeds and over 1,500 of their past and present owners. The breeds were sorted by five core personality traits: openness, extroversion, agreeableness, emotional stability, and rule-following. The study found that owners were likely to pick pups whose personality traits matched their own.
For instance, owners who identified as positive and happy often chose lovable golden retrievers, while those with strong organizational skills and a penchant for following rules tended to pick miniature schnauzers. Whippet dogs were popular among people with many interests or hobbies and a love for new experiences and risk-taking. Pomeranians were the go-to choice for owners who identified as extroverted and agreeable, while friendly and affectionate individuals tended to opt for Staffordshire bull terriers or Jack Russell terriers.
“It appears that we can often tell a lot about a person from the type of dog they own,” said Bill Lambert, a spokesperson for the Kennel Club. “It is quite striking to see how many people unconsciously select dog breeds with personalities that match their own character.”
The subconscious bias that draws us to certain dog breeds leads to an overwhelming majority of dog owners feeling content with their pups. In fact, 88% of owners who researched their breed before getting their dog felt that their dog was “a perfect match” for their lifestyle. And while we may unconsciously flock to dogs that mirror us, 63% of owners still feel that they “follow their hearts” when choosing their beloved new family members.
This study sheds light on the special bond between dogs and humans, highlighting that our relationships with our furry friends go beyond mere companionship. It also underscores the importance of conscious pet ownership. By understanding your own personality and lifestyle, you can choose a dog breed that suits your needs and can provide the perfect match.
The study shows that our pets are more than just animals – they can be mirrors of our own personalities. This discovery can help people to find the perfect furry companion that fits their lifestyle and personality. As a responsible pet owner, it’s important to choose a pet that fits your needs and to care for them in a way that helps them thrive. So, if you’re thinking of getting a dog, take the time to find a breed that matches your personality – you may be surprised at how much you have in common with your new best friend!
