PSA: Xylitol Is Highly Toxic to Dogs

Several yummy and delectable snacks for humans are poisonous to dogs. Grapes and chocolate are two commonly known ones. However, a TikTok post shared to the account @thepethealthclub warns about a lesser-known danger. Xylitol, an artificial sugar substitute, is highly toxic to dogs and can result in liver failure if ingested.

A sugar substitute made from naturally occurring sugar alcohol, Xylitol is frequently found in sugar-free foods and chewing gums. Although it is considered safe for human consumption, it has life-threatening consequences if ingested by dogs. Their pancreas thinks it is real sugar, which can cause their insulin levels to drop. This can result in liver failure and even death. Even small amounts of Xylitol can cause serious health problems. 

If you think or know a dog has ingested Xylitol, seek veterinary care immediately. The post cautions viewers not to wait for symptoms of Xylitol poison to appear, as it can be too late for the dog to receive medical care. Viewers of the video shared their experiences with Xylitol poisoning in dogs. “I lost my first puppy to xylitol poisoning. She got it at her daycare & they waited too long to tell me.” cautioned Frannie Pibble. Other dogs were luckier. Bea Paul109 said “My little munchkin got hold of some sugar-free gum and had to stay overnight at the vets, making him sick and performing countless blood tests” proving how immediate action can save your dog’s life.
