Irvine Woman Arrested for Animal Abuse After Dogs Found with Snouts Taped Shut

In a disturbing incident in Irvine, California, a local woman was apprehended by the Irvine Police Department on counts of felony animal abuse. The arrest came after a concerned neighbor reported hearing dogs whimpering and noticed their snouts taped shut, sparking a broader conversation about animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.

On May 27, the call from the distressed neighbor led IPD Animal Services Officers to the home on Eastshore. Arriving at the scene, they discovered a dog on the patio with its snout bound with masking tape. Whimpering sounds hinted at the distressing possibility of more dogs suffering the same plight.

The accused, 21-year-old Gabriela Barrera, arrived on scene during the officers’ visit. She confessed to having taped the dogs’ snouts in an attempt to curb their barking and prevent them from nipping at other dogs. As the investigation unfolded, officers found a total of seven dogs—three adult females, two adult males, and a pair of puppies. The dogs were of the Husky breed or a Husky/German Shepherd mix, with three of them belonging to Barrera.

Subsequently, Barrera was taken into custody and charged with three counts of felony animal abuse. She is currently held at the Orange County Jail.

A veterinarian, who examined the dogs, confirmed that they were in generally good health, aside from the distress they had been subjected to. The dogs have since been removed from Barrera’s residence and will be held safely until the completion of the case.
