If you’ve ever wondered whether your pet snoozes too much, rest assured — long naps are totally natural. According to The Guardian, most cats sleep between 12 and 16 hours a day, spending nearly 60% of their lives napping, while dogs rest anywhere from 40% to 80% of the time. These cozy habits aren’t laziness — they’re evolution at work.

Experts like Dr. Carlo Siracusa, a veterinary behaviorist at the University of Pennsylvania, explain that cats and dogs inherited these patterns from their ancestors, who needed bursts of rest to conserve energy for hunting and survival. Modern pets, though domesticated, still follow these natural rhythms. Small animals especially prefer warm, snug spaces because they lose heat faster than larger ones, while others seek high perches or tucked-away corners that mimic their wild instincts.

Like humans, animals benefit greatly from quality sleep. Studies show that well-rested dogs are calmer, less anxious, and even better at learning commands. Senior researcher Márta Gácsi from Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest found that dogs use sleep to consolidate memory — much like people do during deep REM cycles. Conversely, sleep-deprived pets may show signs of stress, irritability, or hyperactivity.

If your pet seems unusually drowsy or restless, it might signal discomfort, pain, or anxiety. Experts recommend a vet check-up before assuming it’s behavioral. You can also improve their sleep environment by keeping a calm, familiar space, maintaining a consistent feeding and play routine, and providing comfortable, temperature-appropriate bedding.

Understanding how your animals rest helps create harmony at home — and maybe explains why your cat curls up in the laundry basket or your dog insists on sharing your bed. Letting them sleep undisturbed supports their health and emotional wellbeing, making for happier, more balanced companions.

Next time your pet drifts off again, take it as a sign of trust and safety — proof that your home feels like their true den.
