Why Orange Cats Are Almost Always Male, According to New Genetic Research

The mystery behind orange cats and their signature fiery fur may finally be solved. According to Melissa Ait Lounis via The Daily Galaxy, researchers have discovered that a small DNA deletion on the X chromosome is responsible for turning ordinary cats into ginger legends—and it’s helping explain why most orange cats are male.

The discovery, published in two studies on bioRxiv, centers around a 5,000-base-pair deletion in a non-coding region of DNA—meaning it doesn’t build proteins, but it does influence how nearby genes work. This deletion activates the Arhgap36 gene, especially in melanocytes, the cells that give skin and fur their pigment. The result? A shift from dark fur tones to that iconic reddish-orange.

Because the orange gene sits on the X chromosome, male cats—who only have one X—will display the trait fully if they inherit the deletion. Female cats need two copies of the orange version to be fully orange, which is rare. That’s also why most female orange cats end up as tortoiseshells or calicos, with mixed patches from each X chromosome.

As for the internet-fueled idea that orange cats are extra goofy or clingy? There’s no genetic link to behavior—just a lot of human projection onto a very visible fur pattern. So yes, your ginger cat is probably chaotic, but not because of their DNA.
