Meet Gary, the 10-year-old domestic longhair who’s quietly become a social media sensation—without ever chasing clout. Known as “the Internet’s most adventurous cat,” Gary has racked up over 600,000 followers on Instagram for his awe-inspiring outdoor escapades, from hiking in the Rockies to calmly paddling across alpine lakes. According to GOOD contributor Ryan Reed, Gary’s rise wasn’t engineered—it all started with a stubborn cat and an unlocked front door.

Adopted from the Calgary Humane Society as a kitten with a leg injury, Gary’s early days hinted at a wild spirit. When he began sneaking outside to munch planter plants, his guardian, James Eastham, decided to leash-train him for safety. That small decision has since led to full-on mountaintop adventures—and even a Jeep sponsorship.

While Gary’s snow goggles and mountain views are undeniably cute, there’s something deeper happening. His story is shifting how people think about cats, companionship, and the outdoors. Eastham regularly receives messages from fans who say Gary helped them through personal challenges or inspired them to connect more deeply with their own pets.

Not every cat will love skiing or paddleboarding—but Gary reminds us that animals thrive when given the chance to explore and engage with nature. His adventures challenge the assumption that cats must stay indoors to be safe and fulfilled.

Let’s take a cue from Gary. Whether it’s leash-training your indoor cat for local walks or simply choosing to adopt rather than shop, we all have the power to rethink our relationship with animals. They deserve safe, stimulating lives—filled with adventure, kindness, and compassion.
