Why Climate Is Missing from the Fight to Save America’s Biggest Green Law

When the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) passed in 2022, it was celebrated as the most significant climate legislation in U.S. history. But less than three years later, defenders of the law are barely mentioning the environment. Instead, arguments to preserve the IRA have shifted toward job creation, energy prices, and national competitiveness — especially in light of a potential showdown with China over technology dominance.

According to The New York Times’ Brad Plumer and Lisa Friedman, clean energy companies and lawmakers are now focusing on economic benefits. Solar CEOs and EV manufacturers are telling Congress that repealing the IRA could cost the U.S. nearly 300 factories, 292,000 jobs, and over $220 billion in investment — much of it in Republican districts. In other words, saving solar might be less about the planet and more about the paycheck.

Even environmental groups like the League of Conservation Voters are framing their defense of the IRA as a way to lower utility bills and strengthen American manufacturing. This pivot comes as the Trump administration pushes to erase climate language from government agencies and policies altogether.

Still, the IRA’s climate potential is immense. Before the rhetoric changed, projections showed the law could offset more than 655 million tons of CO₂. Now, analysis from the Rhodium Group warns that repealing its tax credits could unleash hundreds of millions of tons of additional emissions annually by 2035.

This quiet abandonment of the climate narrative shows how fragile environmental progress can be in a hostile political climate. The fight for green energy may now be couched in economics, but the stakes for our planet are unchanged.
