At Paris Fashion Week, designer Gabriela Hearst surprised audiences by showcasing coats made from vintage mink. According to The Guardian’s Jess Cartner-Morley, Hearst claimed the garments were sustainably created by repurposing old fur coats bought in Italy. But no matter how they’re framed, mink coats are still made from the skins of animals who were killed for fashion.
Fur’s return to the runway highlights a disturbing shift. While the fashion world flirts with smaller, more intimate shows and talks the talk on sustainability, it’s also embracing what’s being called “boom boom” style—louder, richer, more visibly hierarchical. Mink is the ultimate boom boom statement: once discarded for being cruel and outdated, it’s now being spun as “ethical” if it’s vintage. But let’s be clear—reusing fur doesn’t erase its violent origin.
Wearing vintage fur still glorifies the idea that animal skin is a luxury item. It keeps demand alive, makes fur fashionable again, and risks undoing decades of progress in animal rights. At a time when plant-based and cruelty-free materials are more innovative and accessible than ever, reviving fur is not a step forward—it’s a giant leap backward.
As the industry scrambles to define what’s “sustainable,” we must remember that true sustainability includes compassion. No trend, no aesthetic, no marketing spin can make fur humane. Whether new or secondhand, fur is a product of suffering. Do not buy fur, shop second hand and eat plant-based. Don’t buy the hype—and don’t buy the fur. Choose fashion that respects all life. The future of style is kind, not cruel.
