We like to think that we know our dogs better than anyone else in the world. We can tell how they feel just by the look in their eyes and know exactly how to make their little tails wag. We know what’s their favorite toy, treat and route to go walking, but could we be missing something pretty important about our dogs? Mainly, what their life was like before they came to us.
Sadly, many dogs who are bought in pet shops or from “reputable” breeders actually come from puppy mills. Puppy mills are large-scale breeding facilities that treat the dogs in their possession like breeding machines. These dogs often live in their own filth, cramped in tiny cages, deprived of proper care and medical attention. When a litter of puppies is born, they are quickly sold and the profits go back to fund the suffering of their parents.
Further, with over eight million needy shelter dogs looking for homes, the puppy mill industry only exacerbates the homeless pet epidemic across the world.
Most people do not know the cruelty inherent in purchasing dogs and, as a result, don’t really know everything there is to know about their furry BFF. So please, be a Green Monster and remember to always adopt and never shop for a best friend.
