When a veterinarian Dr. Andy Mathis received a call about a skinny, stray dog on a dirt road, he wasn’t sure if he would be able to help her, but he knew he had to try. The pup arrived in far worse condition than he could imagine. She was emaciated, dehydrated, hypothermic, anemic, and suffering from a vaginal prolapse, it seemed the only option might be to put her to sleep. However, once he saw her will to live, he decided he wouldn’t let that happen.
The vet took to social media and shared the dog’s story to fundraise for her care at an animal hospital. In no time at all, donations started to pour in. Soon she was also given a name, Graycie Claire, spelled “gray” for her coloring.
The amazing vet team performed surgery and managed to save Graycie but her spirit still needed lifting. She was very uncomfortable around people and refused to eat if anyone was in her room. Mathis was unwilling to give up on her, so he decided to share his breakfast with her.
Every day, he took the time to sit in the cage with her while they both ate together. In this video, posted by Granite Hills Animal Care, we see Graycie getting more and comfortable. She even gets a few four-legged visitors who are happy to see her coming out of her shell.
