UK Renters with Pets Face Unfair New ‘Pet Rent’ Reforms

Pet-loving renters in the UK are struggling with extra charges just to keep their furry friends at home, according to The Guardian’s Mabel Banfield-Nwachi. Many tenants are being hit with “pet rent,” an added cost of £25 to £100 a month, even though traditional extra fees for pets are already restricted under the Tenant Fees Act.

The issue gained attention after MP Taiwo Owatemi claimed a £900 pet surcharge to house her cockapoo, Bella. Meanwhile, everyday renters like Katie Fisher have had to negotiate with landlords just to get a lease approved. Fisher’s offer to pay an extra £50 a month helped her secure a flat after being initially rejected because of her dog.

While landlords can’t legally charge additional one-off fees, raising monthly rent is fair game, says the Dogs Trust. Housing lawyer Giles Peaker explains that there’s no standard rate for pet rent — it’s simply what a landlord and tenant agree to. For some, like Natalie Jacson, the costs feel “completely disproportionate.” Jacson’s £100 monthly fee for her French spaniel adds up to £3,600 over three years — on top of the requirement to clean the property when she moves out.

Luckily, change is coming. A renters’ reform bill will soon require landlords to consider pet requests more fairly. Groups like Generation Rent and the RSPCA are applauding the move, saying it could finally make pet ownership more accessible to renters who have faced “heart-wrenching decisions” over their companions.
