It’s not every day that an Oscar-winning movie captivates both humans and their four-legged companions — but Flow, the dialogue-free animated feature from Latvia, is doing just that. According to The New York Times‘ Esther Zuckerman, pets across the U.S. have been spotted fully engrossed in the film, which recently claimed the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
Directed by Gints Zilbalodis and created using open-source software, Flow tells the story of a black cat and a band of animals navigating a world overcome by rising sea levels. With no spoken words, the film relies on natural sounds, movement, and stunning visuals — and those authentic animal noises may be exactly what’s drawing pets in. Producer Matiss Kaza noted that the use of real animal sounds might explain why dogs and cats seem so captivated.
One cat owner, Chayse Orion, even moved his cat tower closer to the TV so Fishbone — his newly minted cinephile — could watch more comfortably. Other pet parents, like Celine Orosco, said their dogs followed Flow from beginning to end, reacting with noticeable excitement during certain scenes.
Available to stream on Max, Flow isn’t just a charming indie film — it’s a gentle climate allegory wrapped in a visual experience that’s relatable to both humans and animals. Its quiet message about cooperation and empathy in the face of Climate change resonates deeply, without ever saying a word.
If a film about rising tides and interspecies teamwork can get pets’ tails wagging, maybe it’s time we take a cue from them. Choose compassion, reduce your footprint, and Support animal-friendly, climate-conscious choices — whether that’s plant-based meals, cruelty-free products, or simply tuning in to stories that remind us we’re all in this together.
