The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is known for the incredible work they do to help save Africa’s endangered elephants. This video features one of the newest rescues, Wass, a little elephant who had fallen down a man-made well. Poor little Wass is likely an orphan calf; DSWT sees many orphaned elephant calves whose mothers have been killed by poachers. Because a calf relies on their mother for nourishment and protection, it is essential that rescue teams locate orphaned calves before it’s too late.
Although Wass’ condition does not look great, he is now in amazing hands and surely will start to make progress towards recovery thanks to the help of his rescuers. Unlike some of the other elephant rescues we’ve seen, Wass is accompanied by some feathered friends on his way to the DSWT Nairobi Nursery – two baby ostriches! These ostriches were also rescued from the well and seem to have bonded with little Wass. When times are difficult, there is nothing like friends to provide care and comfort.
We wish you a speedy recovery Wass!
