Trump Steps Back From LA Wildfire Rebuild Takeover as Recovery Focus Shifts

After months of political noise, the federal government has backed away from a dramatic plan to take over parts of Los Angeles’s wildfire rebuilding process. That matters, because families who lost everything need real progress, not another power struggle.

According to Politico, President Donald Trump had pushed for federal action that could override local permitting rules after the devastating Palisades and Eaton fires. Yet when the deadline passed, the administration had issued only one minor rule. Even that rule still relied on local governments for inspections and final approval.

In practice, the bigger shift seems to be cooperation. Federal staff have worked with city and county teams, answered questions from survivors, and helped review permit applications. So, instead of a full federal takeover, officials now say collaboration has made further intervention unnecessary.

That is probably a relief for many Angelenos. Land use and rebuilding decisions usually belong to local government, and legal experts had raised serious concerns about federal overreach. More importantly, builders told Politico that permits were not the main obstacle anyway. High construction costs and insurance problems were slowing recovery far more.

That point deserves attention. Climate fueled disasters are becoming harder on communities, public budgets, and mental health. Recovery cannot just be about paperwork.
