While TikTok has become infamous for spreading questionable wellness advice, a new trend is gaining traction that nutrition experts are surprisingly on board with. It’s called fibermaxxing, and as Yahoo Life’s Anouare Abdou reports, it could be the gut-friendly shift we actually need.

Fibermaxxing is all about boosting fiber intake by making smart, plant-based swaps—think adding chia seeds to yogurt or choosing lentil soup over processed lunches. It’s nothing revolutionary, but it’s a Gen Z spin on a timeless truth: most of us simply don’t get enough fiber. According to dietitian Kristie Leigh of Danone North America, the average American only eats around 15 grams a day—less than half the recommended 38 grams for men.

The benefits of fiber go beyond just digestion. Soluble fiber helps lower cholesterol and blood sugar, while insoluble fiber keeps things moving smoothly through your digestive tract. More importantly, fiber feeds the good bacteria in your gut, making it a natural prebiotic that supports overall health and may reduce your risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

That said, there’s a right way to fibermaxx. Experts like Dr. Kezia Joy from Welzo warn that ramping up too fast can cause bloating and discomfort—especially without proper hydration. Start slow, drink plenty of water, and aim for fiber-rich whole foods like oats, beans, apples, and leafy vegetables.

So yes, for once, TikTok might be onto something. Just make sure your plant-based journey doesn’t involve crash-diet vibes or viral gimmicks. Focus on real, whole foods—and your gut will thank you.

Let’s turn this into a lasting shift: eat more plants, skip the meat, and fibermaxx your way to a better you.
