A recent study from King’s College London has found that a simple, inexpensive daily supplement could Support brain health in older adults. Researchers studied 36 pairs of twins over the age of 60 to investigate the effects of prebiotic fiber on cognition. The results, published in Nature Communications, suggest that daily doses of plant-based prebiotics like inulin and fructooligosaccharide (FOS) improved memory and learning scores after just 12 weeks.
The study design was double-blind, with one twin in each pair unknowingly receiving a prebiotic supplement mixed into protein powder, while the other received a placebo. Those who took the prebiotics—both of which are widely available and derived from plants—scored higher on visual memory tests. Notably, this test is also used to detect early signs of Alzheimer’s disease.
The researchers also observed small but meaningful changes in the participants’ gut microbiomes. There was an increase in Bifidobacterium—so-called “good bacteria”—in those who consumed the fiber supplements. These microbes have previously been linked to improved brain function in animal studies by influencing the gut-brain axis, a communication network that connects the digestive system and the brain.
While muscle mass didn’t improve in this short trial, researchers are optimistic. “We are excited to see these changes in just 12 weeks,” said geriatric medicine researcher Mary Ni Lochlainn. “This holds huge promise for enhancing brain health and memory in our aging population.”
As we learn more about the connection between gut health and mental clarity, it’s a good reminder that what we eat matters—not just for our bodies, but for our minds too.
If a humble plant fiber can boost brainpower, imagine what a whole-food, plant-based lifestyle could do. Ditch the ultra-processed snacks and animal products—your gut, brain, and the planet will thank you. Small changes can make a big difference.
