These Backpack Rides Change Lives for Shelter Dogs in New York

One man and his weekly tradition on the subway is giving shelter dogs a chance at a new beginning. On a recent afternoon a white dog with brown spots named Bertha peeked out of a backpack as she rode across the city. She had been found on the streets in October and taken in by Animal Care Centers of NYC. After a rough start she spent the day greeting strangers, choosing a new toy, savoring a pup cup and enjoying a long walk. Her joyful energy eventually led to her adoption only days later.

The man carrying her was not her guardian but a dedicated volunteer named Bryan Reisberg, known online for his efforts to help shelter animals. He spends one day each week lifting dogs from their kennels and gently placing them into a backpack that reads adopt me. The subway becomes a moving stage where riders meet loving companions who simply need a chance to be seen. For dogs like Bertha this visibility can mean warmth, stability and the safety every being deserves.
