According to IQAir’s newly released 2025 World Air Quality Report, only 13 countries and territories on earth meet the World Health Organization’s safety standards for air quality. That’s a drop from the previous year, and it should concern all of us.

The report analyzed data from over 9,400 cities across 143 countries. It found that just 14 percent of cities worldwide breathe safe air. Wildfire smoke, dust storms, and extreme weather events driven by fossil fuel burning are pushing Pollution levels higher. The health consequences are serious. Fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5, is small enough to enter the lungs and bloodstream. It has been linked to respiratory disease, cardiovascular illness, and cancer.

The five most polluted countries were Pakistan, Bangladesh, Tajikistan, Chad, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Meanwhile, the world’s 25 most polluted cities were all in India, Pakistan, and China. Loni, India topped the list with PM2.5 levels more than 22 times the WHO guideline.

In Europe, only Andorra, Estonia, and Iceland made the safe list. The rest of the continent faces rising Pollution from agricultural emissions, Saharan dust, and background combustion from fossil fuels. Switzerland and Greece saw Pollution spike by over 30 percent due to wildfire smoke.

Making things worse, the Trump administration cut the U.S. State Department’s global air quality monitoring program in 2025, leaving millions without access to data. The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air reported that monitoring efforts weakened across 44 countries as a result.

Clean air is not a luxury. Every living being on this planet deserves to breathe safely. Cutting emissions, transitioning to clean energy, and choosing plant based foods are powerful steps we can all take. Add your voice to the movement for a cleaner, healthier world.
