After his shift at the coal mine, John Liscano, a former Limestone County Deputy Sheriff, works to help hundreds of unwanted pets that are brought by people to his 12-acre rescue every year.

Lara’s House receives calls, emails, and text messages every day from people at all hours, asking them to take in an animal. However, the influx of animals in Texas is getting to be a big issue for all shelters.

While Lara’s House is a 501C3 no-kill shelter, CBN News reported that tens of thousands of other shelter animals are euthanized across Texas simply because there is not enough room or money to care for them. Statistics say that for every 10 dogs that enter an animal shelter, only four are adopted.

“I do this because I love animals and I can’t stand to see them suffer. We as people truly don’t deserve them. They have no defense. No voice and all they ask for in return is love,” Liscano said.

Lara’s House has over one hundred dogs waiting to be adopted. Unfortunately, many of these places rely on donations to stay open, and donations are dropping.

“Our main hindrance is funding. It’s hard to operate a shelter such as ours without proper funding,” said John. “Currently, we have about $10,000 in our account right now.”
