According to Karina Hollingsworth, 19 year old Camila Olmos disappeared on Christmas Eve in San Antonio. Her body was later found in a Northwest Side field near her home. A gun was recovered nearby, and the medical examiner ruled her death a suicide.
Doug Beach, executive director of NAMI, urged her loved ones not to blame themselves. Grief can twist into guilt, but blame does not bring answers.
It is a heartbreaking reminder that holiday cheer can feel loud when you are struggling. Beach said depression can worsen this time of year. We get told we should feel joyful. However, plenty of people feel anxious, lonely, or numb instead.
That mismatch can hide real pain in plain sight. Beach said many families are shocked because they had no idea. People can look fine at school or work, and then fall apart alone later.
So it helps to watch for changes, not perfection. Pulling away from family and friends matters. Increased substance use matters too. Excessive risk taking can also be a warning sign. If you notice a pattern, ask directly how they are doing and stay with the answer.
Community Support is part of public health. It belongs in every town budget. It also fits the sustainability story. Safer streets and a cleaner environment can make it easier to cope. Green space can help people breathe and feel less alone. Small routines help too, like a walk outside or sharing a simple plant based meal.
If you are in San Antonio and need Support, the NAMI Warm Line is 210 939 9999. Operators are available 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., 7 days a week. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.
