In a powerful story reported by NPR’s Autumn Barnes for the My Unsung Hero series, a man identified only as “A” shared how his boss’s compassionate decision likely saved his life during a psychotic episode in 2023.
A’s mental health began to deteriorate gradually. He started sleeping less and became increasingly delusional, believing he was a sleeper agent for a secret government mission based on the moon. As his condition worsened, he approached his boss and quit his job, citing a fabricated national security assignment. Despite the surreal nature of the conversation, his boss remained calm and didn’t dismiss him. Instead, she quietly took steps that would later prove life-saving.
After a brief arrest due to erratic behavior — what A described as “driving under the influence of a psychotic episode” — his boss had already contacted a designated crisis responder. That responder not only visited A in jail but arranged for him to receive immediate inpatient psychiatric treatment.
What sets this story apart is what happened next. Once A completed his treatment, his boss welcomed him back without hesitation. That act of empathy and acceptance, A says, restored more than just his career — it saved his life. Without that intervention, he believes he could have died or ended up imprisoned for actions taken under the grip of delusion.
Mental health crises don’t always come with warnings, but people can make a difference by recognizing signs and acting with care. Stories like this show how vital compassionate workplaces are for emotional and societal wellbeing.
We must keep pushing for accessible mental health care and less stigma — and fight for systems that care for humans, not just productivity. Let’s celebrate empathy and protect vulnerable lives. Because no one should have to face mental illness alone.
