LGBTQ+ youth across the U.S. are experiencing a mental health crisis, yet many struggle to access the care they need. According to a recent report by the Trevor Project, despite increasing social acceptance in some areas, young people in the community continue to face high rates of bullying, discrimination, and restrictive policies that make getting mental health care difficult.
Even in progressive states like California, where 81% of respondents said their communities are accepting, half of LGBTQ+ youth who sought mental health Support could not access it. The challenges range from financial barriers to fear of judgment by healthcare providers. Matresa Flowers, a clinician at SMYAL, highlighted how LGBTQ+ youth often question whether a therapist will see them fully and provide a safe space for them to express themselves.
The impact of political shifts is making matters worse. Following the 2024 election, the Trevor Project saw a nearly 700% increase in crisis service calls. A staggering 90% of LGBTQ+ youth reported that their well-being was negatively affected by political developments. While states with more protective policies had lower rates of suicidal ideation, the data still showed that LGBTQ+ youth in all but two states reported experiencing discrimination.
Nonprofits like SMYAL and the Kaleidoscope Youth Center are working to bridge the gap by offering free therapy, safe spaces, and even housing for LGBTQ+ youth in need. As Jen Kuhn from Kaleidoscope noted, many young people come to their center simply looking for a space where they can feel safe and just “be a kid.”
With rising hostility and policy-driven attacks against LGBTQ+ identities, the need for affirming, accessible mental health care has never been greater. Now is the time to Support organizations that provide these essential services and advocate for policies that protect LGBTQ+ youth. Every young person deserves to be seen, heard, and cared for.
