Teacup Yorkie Snatched by Hawk at Dog Kennel but Soamehow Survives

In a truly wild turn of events, a Teacup Yorkie left at a Tennessee dog kennel survived being carried away by a hawk. According to WDEF News, the tiny dog was staying at a Cleveland dog boarding facility while its humans were off on a cruise. Over the weekend, a staff member let the dog out for some outdoor time and briefly left to clean the next area. That’s when nature struck.

The outdoor enclosure was fenced, but not protected from above. That gave a hawk the opportunity to swoop down and grab the small Yorkie right out of the kennel. Thankfully, a neighbor a few streets over later found the dog—sickly and shaken, but alive. She was able to track down the dog’s owners through Facebook, and they are now reportedly considering legal action against the kennel.

The dog daycare facility has since begun installing overhead netting to prevent this from happening again. But it raises bigger questions about how animals—especially the smallest and most vulnerable—are kept safe in outdoor spaces. Natural predators like hawks and owls are protected species, and these kinds of interactions will likely become more common as human development overlaps with wildlife habitat.

As we expand into nature and domesticate animals for companionship, the onus is on us to ensure their safety. Kennels, dog parks, and even backyards must account for all kinds of threats—not just the ones on ground level.
