Meet Julia the mama pig. Although she looks very happy in this video, life wasn’t always so great for her. Julia began her life as a breeding sow on a factory farm. Described as “feisty” by her former keepers, Julia gained her freedom when someone called the local SPCA after witnessing her being beaten and electrocuted. Normally, local animal control groups like the SPCA do not do much about this kind of abuse, which occurs regularly on factory farms, but luckily for Julia this time they did by removing the pregnant sow from the premises. That is when Farm Sanctuary got involved.
Farm Sanctuary is an amazing organization with several locations that provides rescued farm animals with a safe place to live out their days in peace. In Julia’s case, help was right on time, as she gave birth to 16 premature piglets only eight hours after being rescued. Although everyone pulled through, Julia had some lingering health issues that required her to undergo major intestinal surgery. This video is filmed during her return to the barn following this surgery. Her piglets seem overjoyed to see her, proving that animals experience worry, joy, and relief, just like we do!
Thanks to Farm Sanctuary, Julia and her babies will get to live out the rest of their lives in peace and happiness. If you would like to do something to help this group, please click here.
