Swedish Crows Are Learning To Clean Up Cigarette Butts In Cities

In Sweden, some of the city’s smallest cleanup workers have feathers and sharp black beaks. Wild crows are now learning to collect discarded cigarette butts and trade them for food.

The unusual project comes from a Swedish startup called Corvid Cleaning. Around 2022, the company introduced a small machine that rewards crows with treats when they drop cigarette butts into a slot. The idea is simple conditioning. A crow finds a cigarette butt on the street, places it into the device, and receives a peanut in return.

According to Corvid Cleaning, the concept began attracting attention in Södertälje, a city near Stockholm where cigarette filters make up a large share of street litter. Sweden reportedly deals with around one billion cigarette butts thrown away each year. City cleanup costs can also reach millions of dollars.

Researchers say crows are perfect partners for this task because of their remarkable intelligence. These birds can solve problems, remember routines, and even teach other birds new behaviors. In other words, once a few birds learn the trick, the behavior can spread naturally through the group.

This strange partnership between birds and machines also highlights a bigger truth. Humans often overlook how capable animals and urban wildlife really are. With thoughtful ideas, cities may find new ways to protect the environment while reducing Pollution.

Of course, the project is still experimental. Some experts worry that handling cigarette butts could expose birds to harmful chemicals. However, the goal is not to replace human responsibility. Instead, it is to spark creative thinking about how communities can reduce waste and protect the planet.
