The wonderful one-minute video above captures the moment that sun bear cub Murphy arrived at Animals Asia’s Vietnam Bear Rescue Center, following the discovery that he was being trafficked in a small backpack.
When rangers confronted the trafficker, he fled from them by swimming across a river, but was later tracked down via his motorbike license plate and apprehended. He admitted to having killed Murphy’s mother in order to sell her cub into the horrific bear bile industry, and is now facing criminal charges.
While it is tragic that Murphy had to face such trauma and hardship so early on in his life, it will come as a relief to animal-lovers everywhere to know that instead of suffering up to 30 years of continuous torture by bile extraction, in a cage too small for him to move around in – the terrible fate his poacher would have condemned him to – he will instead be able live out the rest of his days under the care of the dedicated Animals Asia staff and volunteers.
