Starbucks is Switching Up Their Plastic Cups to be More Sustainable

In a move to tackle its plastic footprint, Starbucks unveiled a new environmentally friendly redesign for the plastic cups used in all sizes of its cold drinks. This redesign, developed internally as part of Starbucks’ ongoing sustainability efforts, aims to reduce plastic usage by up to 20% compared to the previous versions.

The motivation behind this change is clear: Starbucks aims to address the environmental concerns surrounding its cups, which have often been criticized for contributing to waste accumulation. By committing to reducing waste and carbon output by half by 2030, Starbucks is aligning itself with broader sustainability goals.

The new cups, set to debut at select locations in the US and Canada this year, with a full rollout expected by spring 2025, are not only about using less plastic. Starbucks projects that this initiative will divert more than 13.5 million pounds of plastic from landfills annually. Moreover, the redesign is projected to reduce emissions and conserve water in the production process, marking a significant step towards sustainability.

Crucially, Starbucks ensured that the redesign didn’t compromise the cups’ sturdiness or their ability to keep drinks cold. Through tests with both baristas and customers, the company has fine-tuned the design, even incorporating new accessibility features such as black and white “fill lines” to enhance contrast for different drink colors.

Practical changes have also been made for both employees and customers. By standardizing lid sizes across different cup sizes, Starbucks aims to streamline operations, reducing clutter and saving time. Additionally, embossed letters on the bottom of the cup facilitate quick identification, particularly during busy periods.

While these changes represent significant progress, some environmental advocates argue that more needs to be done. Emma Priestland, from Break Free from Plastic, emphasizes the importance of developing reusable and returnable on-the-go cups to truly tackle the plastic crisis.
