The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has taken an innovative step with the launch of Hong Kong’s first dating-style mobile app for pet adoption. Aptly named Adoption Date, the app brings the familiar swipe-right mechanism popularized by dating apps like Tinder to pet adoption.
In a city where animal abandonment is unfortunately not uncommon, the SPCA’s kennels have reached full capacity. To address this issue and adapt to the fast-paced lifestyles of Hong Kong residents, the Adoption Date app provides a convenient and engaging way for potential pet owners to connect with rescue animals in need of a loving home.
Jenmon Jenkins, the SPCA’s community director, describes the app as a platform for a genuine discovery experience, where users can explore various animals available for adoption, including dogs, cats, and other small animals. This innovative approach aims to tackle the challenges of animal abandonment and low adoption rates post-pandemic, a situation exacerbated by travel restrictions and emigration.
Each animal on the app has a detailed profile featuring a photo, name, age, breed, kennel location, and other relevant information. Users can swipe right on profiles that catch their eye, initiating the possibility of a meet-up at the designated shelter to get acquainted with their potential furry companion.
To celebrate the app’s launch, the SPCA is organizing a Dog Adoption Date event on February 24 at Petisan, a pet store located in Sheung Wan on Hong Kong Island. This event offers participants the opportunity to interact with rescue dogs from SPCA adoption centers, fostering meaningful connections between humans and animals.
