The Southern California coastline is closed after more than 120,000 gallons of oil were spilled into the Pacific Ocean. Federal, state, and local agencies are racing to find the cause of this oil spill that has already done so much damage. They believe that the pipeline may have been damaged by an anchor.
Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley said, “The ramifications will extend further than the visible oil and odor. That our residents are dealing with at the moment. The impact on the environment is irreversible. We must identify the cause of today’s spill, and for the greater good of our cities, beaches, and coastal ecological habitat. We need to understand how to prevent these incidents moving forward.”
These kinds of oil spills are incredibly damaging to wildlife, the environment, and public health. People have been cautioned against going anywhere near the coastline since the oil is toxic. Officials have also started to find dead fish and seabirds in the oil slicks, as the wildlife is unable to get away from the copious amounts of toxic oil waste. Dolphins were also reportedly seen swimming through the oil.
Laura Deehan, state director of Environment California, said, “The hundred-thousand of gallons of oil that spilled into the ocean near Huntington Beach. Provides a stark and dark reminder that oil is dirty, dangerous, and can make our air and water too toxic for life.”
Sign this petition to tell President Biden that the Line 3 pipeline needs to be stopped. We need to shift away from oil and build a more sustainable future.
