Josie, an adorable shelter puppy from South Carolina, was enlisted to help children in a first-grade classroom. Brought to Rags 2 Riches Animal Rescue in Pennsylvania just over a month ago as part of a litter of five, Josie’s fate took a heartwarming turn.

At Hanby Elementary School, Josie quickly became a beloved fixture, thanks to the initiative of Brooke Hughes, a teacher and the mastermind behind the Foster Tales Puppy Therapy Program. Hughes, inspired by her experiences fostering puppies during the pandemic, recognized the profound positive impact these furry companions had on her virtual teaching lessons. Determined to extend this joy to her students, she pioneered the program, bringing shelter puppies like Josie into classrooms to Support social and emotional health.

The benefits of therapy dogs in educational settings are well-documented, with studies highlighting improvements in students’ social engagement, emotional well-being, and learning outcomes. Hughes firmly believes in the transformative power of these furry friends, emphasizing their role in fostering empathy, responsibility, and compassion among students.

Incorporated into the school curriculum, the puppies participate in various activities throughout the day, from reading sessions to interactive lessons, enriching both student learning and their own socialization and development. Beyond academic enrichment, students learn valuable life skills such as patience, teamwork, and emotional intelligence through caring for and interacting with the dogs.

For dogs like Josie, the program offers more than just companionship—it provides a pathway to a forever home. Through Hughes’ advocacy on platforms like TikTok, Josie’s endearing antics captured the hearts of over 1.2 million viewers, ultimately leading to her adoption.
