Billy the elephant has been living in isolation at the Los Angeles Zoo for the past thirty years. Animal rights activists, including celebrities like Bob Barker and Cher, have long been fighting to free Billy and send him to a reputable sanctuary, but he is still stuck in the same miserable conditions he has been in for decades.
A petition on Care2 describes Billy as being incredibly stressed and depressed in complete isolation away from other elephants. Likely suffering from zoochosis, he has been seen swaying back and forth and bobbing his head. The petition explains that although a lawsuit was filed against the L.A. Zoo to improve Billy’s living conditions, he is still living miserably in isolation.
Elephants are highly intelligent and socially complex individuals, and to keep Billy in isolation for this many years is nothing short of cruel and inhumane. Additionally, Billy is not able to exercise like his wild cousins, which is undoubtedly affecting his health.
Please take a moment to sign the petition demanding that this sad elderly elephant is finally sent to a sanctuary where he can live the remainder of his life roaming freely amongst other elephants. The petition also calls us to contact Los Angeles governing officials via phone and email to demand Billy is freed – the contact information is provided on the petition.
Please share this with friends and family as a reminder why we should never Support zoos and other businesses that mistreat and exploit animals!
