Seal Pup Rescued from Plastic Entanglement on Jersey Shore

A seal pup discovered entangled in plastic along the Jersey Shore is now on the road to recovery at a local animal rescue center. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC), situated in Brigantine, shared the uplifting story on their Facebook page, recounting how they responded to a distress call regarding a seal caught in plastic in Beach Haven. The young female gray seal had become entangled in the plastic packaging from a case of water bottles. Thankfully, the plastic hadn’t caused any serious injuries to the seal’s skin.

Upon arrival at the MMSC, the seal pup was described as thin, lethargic, and suffering from gastrointestinal issues. However, thanks to the dedicated veterinary team at the center, she received immediate medical attention. Now, she’s said to be resting comfortably under their care, showing promising signs of recovery. The timing of the rescue aligns with the annual gray seal migration along the New Jersey coast. These marine mammals typically give birth between December and February in the waters of New England and Canada. After just two weeks of nursing, the pups are weaned by their mothers and begin their journey southward. Many of these young seals, still learning to fend for themselves, find their way to New Jersey’s shores.

The MMSC highlighted the challenges faced by these newly weaned pups as they navigate their way south. From learning to hunt for food independently to evading predators, the journey is fraught with risks. Sadly, not all seal pups fare well along the way, making the role of rescue organizations like MMSC crucial in protecting their well-being.
