The coalition’s diverse membership includes influential figures like actor Robert Redford, renowned activist Jane Goodall, and Juan Manuel Santos, the former president of Colombia. Branson emphasized the importance of measurement, stating, “If you can’t measure something properly, you can’t fix it.” Planetary Guardians aims to measure the nine principal planetary boundaries, including the state of rainforests, the progress of climate change, and the status of endangered species. By doing so, they hope to galvanize global efforts to address these critical issues.
Branson also addressed Climate change skeptics, asserting, “It’s a fact of life.” He highlighted the escalating levels of carbon entering the Earth’s atmosphere, which are contributing to Global warming, and warned of the severe consequences if it remains uncontrolled.
During his stay in New York, Branson met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at a fundraiser for the war-torn country. Branson has been actively involved in leading fundraising efforts to aid in Ukraine’s reconstruction. He underscored the importance of supporting Ukraine’s struggle for sovereignty and freedom, stating, “We can’t allow countries in this day and age to take over the territory of other people’s countries.”
Regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine, Branson expressed his belief that it would not end until Ukraine regains its sovereign territory. He remains committed to advocating for Ukraine’s cause and working toward a resolution.
Branson, the founder of the Virgin Group, which spans over 400 companies, including airlines, record labels, and hotels worldwide, including his newest location in Manhattan, Virgin Hotel New York, discussed his enduring connection with New York City. He described it as a place that feels like “coming home.”
The conversation also touched upon Branson’s involvement in Virgin Galactic, his commercial space program. Virgin Galactic successfully launched its first shuttle into space last month. Despite his extensive business ventures, Branson remains environmentally conscious, working to reduce his carbon footprint. He emphasized the importance of carbon reduction in space travel and expressed his commitment to making a positive impact on the environment.
Branson, 73, who had previously embarked on a historic space journey, revealed his optimism about future space adventures, stating, “I booked it for my 80th, 90th, and 100th birthday, and I’m an optimist, so my 110th as well.” His dedication to pushing boundaries and addressing pressing global challenges, such as climate change, continues to inspire and drive meaningful change.
