Health advocates are raising red flags over Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s sweeping changes to the U.S. public health system. As detailed in Yahoo’s report by Brandon Tensley, Kennedy—now Health and Human Services Secretary—has taken drastic actions that could have devastating consequences for Black Americans, a group already facing major healthcare inequities.
Kennedy recently scrapped a meeting of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, the body responsible for determining what screenings and treatments insurers must cover—things like cancer checks and HIV prevention. Advocates say this move, along with his dismissal of vaccine experts and replacement with anti-vaccine voices, threatens access to critical care for marginalized communities. Oni Blackstock, a public health expert, warned that limiting vaccine access could worsen already deadly disparities.
It doesn’t stop there. This spring, Kennedy axed 10,000 jobs across the Department of Health and Human Services, gutting agencies and eliminating many roles filled by Black professionals. According to the NAACP, the cuts jeopardize essential services like Medicaid, Medicare, and community health programs that disproportionately Support Black and low-income Americans.
And while misinformation continues to spread online, Kennedy appears to be fueling the fire. Former FDA vaccine chief Peter Marks resigned in protest, accusing Kennedy of prioritizing lies over science—citing fabricated research and dangerous racial comments during his Senate hearings.
The consequences are already visible. Fewer people are showing up to clinics. Preventive care is falling off. Fear and mistrust are growing. As Jerry Abraham, a street medicine doctor in LA, told Capital B, this isn’t just politics—it’s a matter of life and death.
Now is the time to fight back against policies that make health care harder to access for the people who need it most. Advocate for science, equity, and compassion. Demand public health decisions that lift up, not target, our most vulnerable communities.
