Chicago, Illinois, United States - May 28, 2017: Entrance sign to the South Cargo portion of Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD).

Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport has been placed on red alert following a confirmed measles case linked to a recent traveler. According to The Mirror, the passenger visited the airport’s Terminal 1 on April 22 and 23 and is believed to have exposed hundreds of others to the virus—often considered the world’s most infectious disease.

The infected individual, who had received only one dose of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine, later developed symptoms and tested positive. Despite now isolating at home, their movements prior to the diagnosis have prompted concern. Multiple other public spaces in the Chicago area—such as a health food restaurant, gas stations, and even a public library—were also potential exposure sites between April 21 and 28.

This outbreak in Illinois is part of a wider national trend. A recent Stanford Medicine study published in JAMA warned the U.S. is nearing a tipping point, with cases of measles potentially surging to 1.3 million over the next 25 years unless vaccination rates improve. So far, more than 800 cases have been confirmed across 29 states, with Texas seeing the largest number due to lower vaccination coverage.

While states with high immunization rates are currently safer, the mobility of infected individuals means no area is truly safe. The authors of the study caution that measles, once eliminated in the U.S., could become endemic again—especially as vaccine skepticism spreads and environmental stressors weaken public health infrastructure.

As the planet faces rising threats to human and animal health, this outbreak is a reminder that prevention matters. Vaccines, just like plant-based diets and clean energy, are part of a broader movement to safeguard life. Staying informed, protecting the vulnerable, and supporting science-based public health decisions helps keep both people and the planet safer.

Take action today: Choose science, choose compassion. Support community health by encouraging vaccination, eating plant-based, and demanding strong public health protections for humans and animals alike.
