Henley the beagle spent his life in a lab, undergoing experiments in the name of science. Before a new pharmaceutical, pesticide, or chemical is made available to the public, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires that it be rigorously tested on animals. Because of beagles’ docile nature, they’re are commonly used for these tests.
We can’t imagine the kind of pain and suffering these beagles endure … but thankfully, Henley was saved from this life and placed in a new home. However, his new family didn’t know how to handle his severe PTSD, so they dumped him at a shelter.
Luckily, hardworking folks at the Beagle Freedom Project, a Los Angeles-based non-profit, who dedicate their lives to fighting for these unseen victims of animal testing every day, found Henley a new forever home! This video chronicles Henley’s journey from cage to comfy couch.
It’s heartbreaking to look at the footage of Henley stepping out of the cage before journeying to his new home; he circles in place, because all he’s ever known is a life of confinement as a lab dog.
But now, Henley can finally have a life of freedom and joy. After only a month at the home of his new humans, Brittany and Mark, he’s already doing much better! They, of course, gave him lots of love and cuddles and patiently rehabilitated him. “He’s gone from nervous circles, to sitting at your feet,” Mark said in the video. Henley’s ability to trust his new humans is truly remarkable, considering he spent most of his life neglected and abused at the hands of humans!
