Skywatchers are in for a treat this week as a rare seven-planet parade lights up the night sky. According to FOX Weather, all seven planets in our solar system – Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus – will be visible together on Friday, February 28, 2025.
The best time to catch this cosmic event is shortly after sunset, when Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn can be seen without any optical assistance, NASA says. For a view of Neptune and Uranus, a telescope will be needed.
This phenomenon, known as an alignment, happens when the planets appear to line up on the same side of the Sun. Although they’re always orbiting along the same plane called the ecliptic, they only occasionally appear close together from Earth’s perspective.
NASA notes that planetary parades aren’t all that uncommon, but having both Mercury and Venus visible makes this event particularly special, as these planets’ proximity to the Sun often makes them difficult to spot.
If you miss this week’s display, don’t worry—another alignment featuring four planets will occur in August 2025. In the meantime, grab a telescope, find a spot with minimal light pollution, and enjoy this celestial spectacle.
Now’s a great time to appreciate the natural beauty of our universe. If we can take inspiration from the wonders of the cosmos, let’s also commit to protecting the Earth. By making eco-friendly choices, reducing waste, and advocating for cleaner skies, we can keep our planet as healthy and awe-inspiring as the stars above.
