It’s hard to imagine the type of person who can go through the motions of adopting a pet, something that is a lifetime commitment and choose to abandon them over something trivial. Toto, the dog in the video, is a three-year-old Chihuahua, had lived with his dad for over a year before it was decided that this pup was “too talkative” —  meaning he barked too much. Who would expect that? His guardian’s solution? Abandon him at Saving Carson Shelter Dogs. This video clocks in at under 30 seconds, but trust us, you’ll want a box of tissues on hand because it is incredibly difficult to watch.

The most painful part of the video is how desperately Toto wants to get his dad’s attention — he looks up at the human, who had become his entire world, with sad eyes and tries to climb up his leg as if to say “please don’t leave me.” Who could look at a dog so frightened and so desperate and not even offer so much as a comforting scratch behind the ears? Toto may have had his heart broken that day, but if you ask us, he didn’t need a human like that in his life.

Luckily, Toto wasn’t alone for long. We’re happy to report that after just one short day at the shelter, this little dog has been adopted. Huzzah! We wish him nothing but the best with his new forever family.
