Dogs used by breeders as money-making machines typically live a life of misery, cursed with many ailments and diseases. With profit as the prime concern for breeders, the health and well-being of the animals often go neglected. So was the case with a lovely female Pit Bull named Clara who was rescued by the Trio Animal Foundation in Chicago, Illinois.

It was apparent Clara had been used as a breeding dog for many years, and her list of ailments was long: bladder and ear infections, an abdominal hernia, anemia, kidney problems, and a severe case of pyometra, an infection of the uterus that would have killed her if she did not undergo surgery.

The next several weeks were an uphill climb for sweet Clara, and despite the overwhelming stress of all the blood transfusions, X-rays, and IVs, she remained a gentle dog with her caretakers.

Luckily, this sweet girl’s story has a happily ever after … A kind woman named Monique who lost her dog to kidney issues decided to adopt Clara, and it was love at first sight for them both! Hooray!

Clara’s story is a lesson in why overbreeding dogs is irresponsible and dangerous. It is also a lesson on the value of adoption. Every day, 5,500 animals are euthanized in U.S. shelters, many for no reason other than there is not enough space for them. Adoption not only saves innocent lives, but it enriches your own as well. Even if you are unable to adopt, consider fostering a shelter animal to help prepare them for their forever home while clearing up space at the shelter. And if you are unable to bring animals to your home, volunteering your time at shelters and donating to rescues truly helps the greater cause as well.

And please remember to share this story with your friends and family as a reminder that adoption saves lives!
