PETA Urges Amusement Ride Manufacturer to Stop Producing Animal-Themed Carousels

PETA has asked Chance Rides, the largest American amusement ride manufacturer, to cease the production and sale of animal-themed carousels. PETA President Ingrid Newkirk wrote to the Kansas-based company, arguing that such merry-go-rounds perpetuate the exploitation of sentient beings.

PETA contends that the depictions of animals on carousels contribute to the misconception that these creatures exist solely for human entertainment, disregarding their ability to experience emotions such as fear, pain, joy, and love. Newkirk emphasized, “All animals are thinking, feeling, affectionate, playful, and social beings who form strong bonds with their offspring if permitted to keep them.”

The organization backed its argument by citing instances of animal cruelty associated with carousel figures. PETA’s investigation into Egyptian camels revealed disturbing practices, including hitting, yanking, tying up, and forcing the animals to walk on their knees, eliciting cries of pain. The organization also highlighted the lifelong abuse of elephants for rides, emphasizing the separation of babies from their mothers and subsequent beatings with bull hooks.

PETA proposes an alternative for Chance Rides, suggesting the production of vehicle figures like cars, bulldozers, and tractors or opting for “whimsical” designs such as rainbows. This, according to PETA, would align with society’s evolving perceptions regarding human relationships with other creatures.

In her statement, Newkirk acknowledged the changing times and emphasized the evolution of society’s understanding of animals over the past few decades. “Animals are to be respected, not exploited, and companies can and should evolve to keep up with the times,” she stated.
