What started as a strange call about a “leopard” in distress turned into a lifesaving mission. According to People Magazine, the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) rescued a pit bull terrier and her nine puppies after they were found tethered in scorching 99-degree heat in Phoenix. But what shocked rescuers even more—this poor mama dog had been painted with multicolored spots to look like a leopard.

Named Rainbow Brite by the shelter team, the five-year-old dog was found with a dangerously high body temperature of 105.7°F. The concrete she was lying on had reached 133°F. AHS emergency staff cooled her down with wet towels and rushed her and her puppies to safety.

Underweight and dehydrated, Rainbow Brite needed immediate care—not just for herself, but also for her litter of nine pups, lovingly dubbed her “sprites.” After stabilising, the family was moved into AHS’s “Mutternity Suites,” a calm space for nursing dogs.

The dog’s story quickly went viral, gaining over 75,000 views on TikTok. Viewers were stunned by her painted appearance and relieved she was finally safe. While her original owner agreed to surrender her, the shelter used the incident to remind the public that tethering dogs in extreme heat is not only cruel—it’s illegal in parts of Arizona.

The family is now recovering in foster care and will soon be up for adoption. In the meantime, Rainbow Brite’s “leopard” spots will fade—but hopefully, the memory of her rescue will not.

It’s heartbreaking how common neglect still is. Please consider fostering or adopting from your local shelter. Better yet, help spread awareness—animals like Rainbow Brite deserve compassion, not cruelty.
