Over 1,000 Sea Lions are Crowding Pier 39 in San Francisco

Pier 39 in San Francisco with sea lions

Springtime in San Francisco brings not only blooming flowers and warmer weather but also a delightful view at Pier 39 – the gathering of over 1,000 sea lions, marking the largest herd seen in at least 15 years. These marine mammals have made themselves at home on rafts along the pier, capturing the attention and admiration of thousands of passing tourists each day.

According to the pier staff, the abundance of anchovies in the bay has lured the sea lions, providing them with a steady food supply and making them extra active. This annual gathering has become a major attraction in the city since the first sea lion, affectionately nicknamed Flea Collar, arrived at the pier in 1989, followed by several hundred of his companions. Some years witness as many as 1,700 sea lions, while in other years, the numbers dwindle to a few hundred. Fortunately, for those unable to witness the spectacle firsthand, the pier offers a daily live stream of seal activity, ensuring everyone can partake in the experience.

Many of the male sea lions at Pier 39 are likely en route to the Channel Islands off the coast of southern California, where they will meet up with females for mating, according to Dan Costa, a professor specializing in marine mammals at UC Santa Cruz. These nomadic creatures move north and south throughout the year, yet researchers still seek a comprehensive understanding of their migration patterns along the western coast.

Costa’s lab has embarked on tracking female and juvenile sea lions along the California coast, aiming to unravel their migration patterns and understand how their movements and foraging behaviors may vary according to ocean conditions. This research holds promise for insights into how Climate change and warming ocean temperatures might impact the species.

In recent years, fluctuations in sea lion populations have been observed, partly attributed to changes in ocean conditions such as marine heatwaves. During these events, fish that sea lions prey on become concentrated in specific areas, potentially influencing the abundance of sea lions at popular spots like Pier 39. Despite the scientific intrigue surrounding their behavior, one thing remains certain – Pier 39 holds a special place in the hearts of these sea lions.
